January 2019

Dear Friends of ADF:

I’m always impressed by how much we accomplish in a given year, and 2018 was no exception. Yet, we stay focused on our core mission, ensuring students have the literacy resources to succeed.
2018 kicked off with our 2nd annual Red White and Blue Ball at our new home, the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Our Olympic-themed event, continues to engage families throughout the Bay Area.
In all three markets we support schools—Greater Bay Area, Phoenix and Honolulu—we continue to host children’s literacy festivals for families to enjoy and come together to celebrate reading!
Our Annual Gala event was a truly memorable evening, honoring our long-time donor and friend, Dick Barker. We also announced our redesigned literacy program, launching this month.
At the end of the year, we organized a wonderful holiday benefit concert on Oahu with Hawaii’s most popular female band of all-time, Na Leo Pilimehana.
These are just a few of our 2018 highlights that you made special.

This week, we are so excited to be launching a pilot of our newly redesigned Always Reading program in kindergarten classrooms at two schools within the Oakland Unified School District: Allendale Elementary and International Community School. Fifty students and their families will participate in a parent education session to teach book sharing and other engagement strategies. Plus, each student will receive a tablet with a cloud-based digital library of high-quality books for use at home and internet access to those in need. ADF is working with an outside firm to evaluate all aspects of the new program and make refinements following the pilot. We will also provide ongoing support and education to the participating families and the program will culminate with a celebration at the end of the school year. We then look forward to launching to an even bigger audience and serving more students this fall.

Our family spent the holiday break packing up book bags for our pilot program. Thanks to donors like you, we are able to provide our students with tablets full of high-quality books. Our success is made possible by your continued engagement and support.

Happy New Year and cheers to making a difference in the lives of children! Thank you!
