Israel can shoot for the moon, thanks to you!

Dear friends:

Meet my 5-year-old friend, Israel. Israel never had much interest in reading. But through his participation in our

new Always Reading Literacy Program, he discovered books about outer space! He read them “over and over and over” and now he wants to be an astronaut. The pure elation and gratitude that Israel’s father expressed was so touching. Seeing this example of how books create dreams and open young minds to possibilities reaffirmed all the work that we do, and that donors like you make possible. Thanks to you, Israel can shoot for the moon!

Israel and his family were a part of our redesigned Always Reading Literacy Program along with 49 other families from Allendale Elementary School and International Community School in the Oakland Unified School District. Each family received an e-tablet with access to a digital library to take home during the school year. During the pilot, our Always Reading Book Coach led two parent education training sessions around family literacy practices and communicated with three messages a week sharing literacy tips and strategies.

Our new program focuses on three pillars:

The program culminated with a year-end celebration for the students to recognize their reading accomplishments through the program.

While we’re still engaged with our original schools in Northern California, Arizona, and Hawaii, we are thrilled to announce that with your support ADF will launch the redesigned program this coming fall with five schools: Allendale Elementary (Oakland, CA), International Community School (Oakland, CA), Blanche Pope Elementary (Waimanalo, HI), Malama Honua Charter School (Waimanalo, HI), and Starlight Park Elementary (Phoenix, AZ)!

Thank you for giving more kids like Israel the tools and resources to dream!
