This holiday season will be like no other, but there is still so much for us to be grateful for … starting with YOU! Thank you for your unyielding support of our students and their families during this difficult time. Distance learning has become the reality this year for our schools, students, and families. The pandemic has highlighted the necessity of digital platforms and increased family engagement demonstrating that our Always Reading program is more relevant than ever before. We are excited to share that, thanks to donors like you, our Always Reading program has grown by over 100% and now serves 10 schools and 500 students, across California, Hawaii, and Arizona.
Due to the pandemic, we needed to adjust aspects of our delivery model that would have typically happened in-person. Our Family Literacy Book Coaches led 23 virtual Parent Education sessions, which enabled them to engage more families in orientation than in the prior year. Responding to direct feedback received last year, we have expanded our ability to communicate with parents in their primary home language. Our text-based curriculum is now available in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Arabic.
In the first month alone, students have read a combined 1,100 hours on their new tablets! After one student read over 360 books in October, the parent texted Book Coach Kathy Moore and said “We plan to read even more!” Thank you for supporting our students and families. Your support provides them with the resources needed to build a strong foundation of early literacy skills!
